Iceland Excursions With Links & Photos

Iceland was a dream vacation for my husband and me, and we always believed it was an unobtainable one. However, not only did we go, we were able to plan a spectacular trip in just two months. We were supposed to take a trip to Dallas for our spring break, but that changed when, one night, my husband started watching reels on his Instagram account and watched a breathtaking reel of the waterfalls in Iceland. He quickly thought, “Yeah, it’s probably so expensive and in no way possible for us to do,” but, for the heck of it, he searched up flights and found them to be outstandingly affordable. I was awakened from deep sleep to Andrew yelling, “We’re going to Iceland, BABY! I am booking this RIGHT NOW!” I, too, was in disbelief when I saw the prices of the flight.

I truly am blessed to have a husband that is so adventurous and spontaneous. I remember telling him “Okay, but where are we going to stay or sleep?” He responded, “I don’t know. We’ll find a cave or something.” Ha ha ha, that’s Andrew for you. March is part of Iceland’s off-season, and although the weather is extremely bipolar and unpredictable, it’s still possible to see Iceland’s natural beauty (just for a more affordable price). I am not exaggerating when I say you feel like you are on another planet, so we weren’t surprised to learn that Star Wars and the popular space movie Interstellar were filmed in this marvelous country.

BLACK SAND BEACH:

Black Sand Beach was my favorite excursion. This beach is breathtaking. The waves are massive, and, therefore, no one is allowed to swim at Black Sand Beach. The waves are known as “killer waves” as there have been a few unfortunate deaths. Andrew and I turned our backs for a few seconds to snap a picture, and a giant wave snuck up on us. Luckily, Andrew was quick enough to spot it, and we quickly ran away from the wave. However, despite the ban on swimming, Black Sand Beach is still one of the best places to visit in the world. You should experience it for yourself.

THE BLUE LAGOON:

The famous “Blue Lagoon” is just as stunning in person as it looks in photos. The water is enjoyable and warm. In March there are not many people visiting Iceland; so, fortunately, we were able to enjoy the Blue Lagoon without fighting crowds. Enjoying the drinks and the famous silica and algae masks are a must. If you plan on taking your phone inside the lagoon, I encourage you to pack a waterproof case to keep your phone safe. The steam is intense, and rain in Iceland comes and goes.

Side Note: Do not dip your hair in the water. Many people do not take this seriously. Make sure to condition your hair really well in case it accidentally gets wet. I got my hair slightly wet, and since I had just bleached it, the outcome made it feel super coarse.

SKOGAFOSS WATERFALL

Skogafoss Waterfall was nothing short of magical. We took a tour bus that drove us around to experience different sights. When we arrived here, we had the option of taking a 15-minute staircase up and 15 minutes down, but we decided to take it in from the bottom. We did get wet, but it was all so worth it. I mean, look at that rainbow! We truly lucked out. I’m still at a loss for words to describe it. You have to experience it. As cheesy as it sounds, I suggest dancing with someone, getting wet, and running around as if no one is watching. It will feel like the best feeling ever. If you have the opportunity to visit this waterfall, don’t forget your shoes and waterproof pants because you will get wet.

Solheimajokull Glacier

The Solheimajokull Glacier hike was our very first activity. The only word that kept coming out of my mouth was “WOW.” Let me start by saying, the weather is insane, and it changes every two minutes. It went from cold to warm to super cold to snow to clear sky in under ten minutes. The last photo you see on this slideshow is how it looked when the sky cleared up. Also, the hike up was amusing, which further made it worth doing.

GRINDAVIK VOLCANO

We also hiked around the Grindavik Volcano. I was skeptical about this hike because I am not a fan of hikes, but, on the other hand, I know that my husband Andrew loves them, so I agreed because why not? We hiked up an active volcano, and although the wind was unrelenting, I fought it and made it to the top. This was probably the coldest day I had ever experienced in my life. I could not feel my fingers, face, or feet. It was still worth every step. No matter where you go or what you do in Iceland, everything and anything will take your breath away, and you will be left with moments to remember.

Overall, we enjoyed everything we did.  A few of our plans were canceled, like the northern lights and glacier cave excursions, but that did not matter. The entire trip was both a blessing and a dream come true. We cannot wait to visit Iceland again one day. Until next time, LovelyLivelyAlexis.
